
The resignation is understood to be a procedural move in line with the club’s statutes ahead of the upcoming presidential elections.
Laporta is seeking another term in charge, with club members set to vote on March 15.
He will face competition from Víctor Font and three other candidates in the race for the presidency.
Stepping down allows Laporta to formally begin his re-election campaign while complying with Barcelona’s internal rules.
In the meantime, the club’s day-to-day operations will be overseen by a temporary management committee.
