Sol Phenduka, the South African radio personality, has shared a frightening road incident after nearly being involved in a car accident near his home.
In a post on X, Phenduka explained that a traffic light in his neighbourhood, which had been malfunctioning for over six months, suddenly started working again.
Accustomed to the light flashing for months, he said the change didn’t immediately register as he approached the intersection. He drove as usual, only realising at the last moment that the light was now fully operational and showing a solid red.
“Today it worked… I saw it’s working but it didn’t register in my head that it’s actually working,” he wrote, describing the moment as a “rude awakening.”
The story sparked discussion among his followers, with many expressing relief that Phenduka was unharmed and sharing advice on how motorists should navigate intersections with malfunctioning traffic lights.
Some noted that flashing red lights should always be treated as stop signs, while others highlighted how confusing it can be when drivers suddenly encounter a properly functioning signal after months of faulty behaviour.
